Nightly Examination of Conscience

Spirit of God, enlighten my heart and my mind so that I can review my day in the light of truth; that I may see my failures, feel remorse, and be moved to true repentance. Only in this way can I ever become holy.

Let me consider how well I upheld the Ten Commandments today...

  1. Have I put something above God today in thought, word, or action?

  2. Have I taken the Lord's Name in vain today?

  3. Did I keep the sabbath by going to Church and not working (if it is Sunday or a holy day)?

  4. Have I honored my father and mother in thought, word, and action today?

  5. Have I killed another person's body, spirit, hope, joy, or faith today with words or actions?

  6. Was I unchaste in thought, word, action, or attire today?

  7. Did I steal, cheat, withhold, or bribe another for material gain today?

  8. Did I lie, gossip, slander, judge, or violate one's confidence today?

  9. Did I willfully entertain impure thoughts and desires today?

  10. Was I resentful or envious of another person's material possessions today?

Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.
